Potatoes vs sweet potatoes. How to grow them from groceries.

Regular potatoes sprout eyes if left out too long. The potato plant grows from the eye. You only need one eye per piece of potato to get a potato plant. Once the potato starts to grow eyes you can plant the potato.

If the potato is bigger than a few inches you can cut the potatoes into smaller pieces to get more plants.

Sweet potatoes can spout vines if left out too long. You can force vines to grow by placing a sweet potato in water. I used a recycled candle jar in this case. The sweet potato was 2/3 submerged in water. I changed the water weekly and let it on my counter.

Once the sweet poltato vines, called slips, are 3 or 4 inches long you snap them off of the sweet potato and set it in water to sprout roots. When the slips have roots and the weather is warm you can plant the slips.

How much water do you put in the jars?
